NHRC Expresses Concern About Health of Hunger Striking MP Gautam

Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to address the demands raised by the member of the House of Representatives, Sanjay Kumar Gautam, who is on a hunger strike and thereby save his life.

The NHRC Lumbini Province Branch Office, Nepalgunj noticed serious problems with his health, and has urged him to resolve the problem through negotiations and pay attention to saving his life.

"The NHRC urges the Government of Nepal to ensure the right of development of the common citizens by addressing the reasonable demands raised by Parliamentarian Gautam through meaningful dialogue," reads a press statement released by Dr Tikaram Pokharel, the spokesperson of the NHRC.

Gautam is a member of the House of Representatives elected from Bardia constituency No. 1. He has been on a hunger strike for the past seven days in Bardiya putting forth a 15-point demand under the campaign 'Save our Bardiya: Make better Bardiya'.

His demands include:

-Construction of a bridge over the Karnali River to connect Bardiya with other parts of the country.
-Construction of a road to connect Bardiya National Park with the rest of the country.
-Development of irrigation facilities in Bardiya.
-Development of health facilities in Bardiya.
-Development of educational facilities in Bardiya.
-Development of tourism in Bardiya.
-Protection of the environment in Bardiya.
-Rehabilitation of the displaced people of Bardiya.
-Provision of employment opportunities to the people of Bardiya.
-Development of infrastructure in Bardiya.
-Provision of basic amenities to the people of Bardiya.
-Improvement of law and order in Bardiya.
-Development of Bardiya as a model district.
The NHRC has urged the government to address these demands as soon as possible and save the life of Gautam.

The government has said that it is committed to addressing the demands of Gautam and other people of Bardiya. However, it has not yet made any concrete commitments.

The hunger strike by Gautam has drawn attention to the problems faced by the people of Bardiya. It is hoped that the government will take this opportunity to address the demands of the people and improve the lives of the people of Bardiya.
